greek islands... here we come

Later today Brett & I are going to embark on our vacation to the Greek Islands! I can't even believe the time is finally here. We have been talking about this for months that I never thought it was actually going to happen. So to kickoff our vacation, since we have to fly through London anyway, we decided to pick a flight with a pretty long layover so that we could get into London to soak up some of the atmosphere of the Olympics. Of course we don't have tickets for anything, but we figure we can just get there and see what happens and then we head back to the airport and catch our flight to Athens. Then from there we will be taking ferries to four different islands - Paros, Mykonos, Santorini, and ending in Crete. It is going to just be so amazing and incredible. I am really, really looking forward to getting away from the daily grind and just be seaside for two weeks!

I downloaded a blogger app for my ipad & will try my hardest to update as I can for you but I am not sure what type of internet connection I will have. I will probably just instagram a few pictures as I can because it is the easiest way to upload quickly, so make sure you are either following me on instagram or twitter; username for both is @suzeebabe so you have no excuse not to follow! :]

Anyway! I have lots of packing and running around to finish, but I will leave you with a quick look into what my life looks like right now, I hope the rest of you all have an amazing couple of weeks.

twenty-four

Today I turn 24.

It's amazing to see what these past 365 days have brought me . I have already accomplished so much that I never thought imaginable; became full time employed at my work, took Brett to meet my family in Scotland, got an iPhone, went to my first basketball game, went for an all day hike through Yosemite, visited Chicago and Indiana. But what am I telling you this for? You've been sitting along side me while I blog about it all, right? :]

Even though I am working for a bit today, I will be heading off to Greece in just a few days with Brett for two whole weeks! I am beyond excited for our adventure together and to have some quality time away from everything and just enjoying all that the islands have to offer.

crossing things off the list

Is it really July 23rd already?! Where has the summer gone?? Well unfortunately I haven't been able to do too many things from my summer 2012 list but I did manage to squeeze in the "garage sale" the other weekend because Brett's family was having one, so my parents & I brought some things over and got rid of some stuff - which was great!

This past Saturday night I took Brett to his FIRST ever drive-in-movie.. can you believe it?! There is a great drive-in only about 20 minutes away from our house and it is a really popular place during summer for friends & families to come and watch a movie in the comfort of your very own car. We folded all the seats down and opened up the back door of his suv, put out all the blankets and pillows and brought our own snacks. The movie we watched was Ted - it was just as funny as I was hoping it would be!

Then... drum roll please...... On Sunday Brett & I are jet-setting to the Greek Islands!! That definitely satisfies my exotic vacation, what do you think?? :) I also have some "trashy" novels that I am going to take with me for some light reading on the plane and also on the beach while we are there! Slowly but surly I am working on crossing off my summer to do list.

How are your summer activities going? Share your summer activities in the comments, I would love to hear about them!

30 hours to see Chicago

Sunday morning we sat on the train from Indiana to Chicago, completely exhausted from not only the wedding the night before, but from our ridiculous airport adventure out here. I  have never been to Chicago before so I had no idea what to expect - I was excited and nervous all in one. The train took us only a couple blocks away from our hotel, so a little early we headed there anyway hoping to just drop our luggage off at least. We picked this hotel because it was won the 2012 Trip-Advisor award for "Trendiest hotel in Chicago" and let me tell you, it lived up to it's name.
When you walked in, you were greeted with friendly staff, a beautiful scent of what one can only image 'tahitan vanilla' and quiet but still there trendy house music. Our room was ready for us, so we went up to the 11th floor and heard the slight sound of birds chirping in the hallway. Our room was fantastic, we had a pretty great view of the city and could even see out to the river to the right. The room was absolutely stunning  and beautiful! We quickly took in the room and then were hit with such excitement we immediately set out to see the sights.
Our first stop was Millennium Park - to see the bean! With temperatures high and little cloud in the sky we were optimistic for a great day. We had fun walking around the bean to see all the angles of the city and take as many silly pictures as we could. It was actually really crowded as well, there were lots of people who had the same idea we did.

Then, before you knew it... Those huge black clouds ▲▲ turned into big rain drops & gusty winds ▼▼ complete with a soaked Brett & Susie making haste back to our hotel to wait out the "storm." {aka about an hour}
After we dried off, changed and watched the rain, we saw some clouds break and some blue skies appear and decided to it would be a good time to check out the sky deck/top of Willis {formerly Sears, in case you didn't know, because I didn't} tower.
We had some amazing views all the way around the tower as you can see. Unfortunately it was a little hazy and the windows were a bit dirty after the rain but it is pretty hard to believe just how high you are. They say on a clear day you can see 4 states; Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and of course Illinois.  Standing out on "the ledge" was pretty scary too, the glass just does not look thick enough to support everyone. They had an entire wall removed and replaced with 4 of these ledges where everyone was taking turns walking on and looking out.
After we got down from the tower it was late afternoon so we went over to Navy Pier to check that out. It kind of reminded me of a combination of Pier 39 in SF and the Santa Cruz boardwalk. With a beer garden in the middle. Of course by now you can see the clouds have fully disappeared and we had a really nice view looking back at the city with the afternoon sun. {it was still a million degrees though} Then we went back to our hotel and got ready for some evening festivities. We met up with one of Brett's friends from school who is conveniently working in Chicago in the summer while he is in grad school at Irvine. We experienced as much night life as we could that night, but we were A. pretty tired and B. it was a Sunday so places were closing down early.

And of course you didn't think I forgot to mention some "authentic" Chicago food. I use authentic lightly here, so don't get all offended but you know everyone talks about Chicago Deep Dish Pizza and their Chicago style dogs. We shared a SMALL deep dish stuffed pizza from Giordano's. After we ate the pizza we pretty much couldn't move or needed anymore food for the rest of the day. It's hard to even look at that pizza right now. Later, Brett had his vienna beef street cart hot dog with all the fixings.

My overall feelings for Chicago were that I loved it! I have never been to New York/Manhattan but I feel like I can say Chicago is a bit San Francisco meets New York meets London. It was an absolutely fabulous city and I am already dying to go back and explore more! I couldn't get enough, I loved every minute, every corner, every feeling I had while I was there.

Chicago, I think you & I are going to become great friends someday.

have you ever been through Indiana?

Wow, what a whirlwind of a trip! I don't even know where to start. I am still trying to get back into the swing of things, but having last Wednesday off for the 4th has thrown me all off again. It feels good to work on these blogs and get all my pictures onto my laptop and settle back at home.

Our trip to Indiana & Chicago was so much fun! Unfortunately we had a horrible experience trying to get to Chicago. Our flight was supposed to leave on Thursday night, which would put us into Chicago around 1 in the morning on Friday. To cut the long story short because I don't want to bore you, the runway lights went out in Midway so they cancelled our flight.  We quickly booked the next flight we could find which was Friday morning. This flight was going into O'Hare this time. Right as we board the flight, the captain tells us there are thunderstorms in Chicago and our flight was delayed a few hours. So almost 48 hours later from our start time, we made it to Indiana! Which cut our time in Indiana down by a lot and we basically had just a few hours on Saturday before the wedding. Luckily Brett's uncle let us borrow his truck and we were able to do our own thing and get ourselves around as we needed.
We got up as early as we could on Saturday morning and went to find my favorite spot... Dunkin Donuts! I can't believe they have them everywhere but California. After that Brett took me out to Michigan Lake and the sand dunes to see their version of a "beach." It much nicer than I imagined; but it was so strange to not see big waves and not feel an ocean breeze. The weather was really hot - 90's with lots of humidity! After putting our toes in the water we had to hustle back to our hotel room and get ready for the wedding.

It was a really beautiful church wedding with the reception followed in a banquet hall. The bride {Brett's cousin} looked absolutely stunning as well as all the bridal party. It was such a different experience but I was so lucky to be able to celebrate and meet more of Brett's huge family. We danced away into the night until our feet could barley keep us up and then we made it back to our hotel.
The next morning we had to get up early to return his Uncle's truck and catch the 9.30am train into Chicago but more on that to come :]
